Georgia Department Of Revenue Announces That Residents Can Now Claim Embryos As Dependents On Their Taxes

The state of Georgia has just confirmed a major change that is set to financially help those who are expecting children. The Georgia Department of Revenue recently announced that all Georgia residents are now eligible to claim embryos as dependents on their state taxes, translating to thousands of dollars.

The new tax initiative formally states that Georgia residents can claim the embryos of their unborn children when filing states taxes, garnering $3,000 for each unborn child. Additionally, the Georgia Department of Revenue released a statement confirming that a Georgia taxpayer who “has an unborn child with a detectable human heartbeat after July 20th can claim a dependent or dependents on 2022 taxes.”

The formal statement regarding the decision on the embryos reads:

“In light of the June 24, 2022, U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and the July 20, 2022, 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in Sistersong v. Kemp, the Department will recognize any unborn child with a detectable human heartbeat … as eligible for the Georgia individual income tax dependent exemption.”

The document continued, adding “Similar to any other deduction claimed on an income tax return, relevant medical records or other supporting documentation shall be provided to support the dependent deduction claimed if requested by the Department.”

The ruling comes on the heels of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, as women’s reproductive rights continue to be the source of intense discussion and debate throughout the country.
