‘Robust growth led RBI to keep rates on hold’

0

MUMBAI: RBI governor Shaktikanta Das cited robust growth in the economy, supported by an upturn in manufacturing and the investment cycle as reasons for keeping interest rates on hold.
The governor’s views during the monetary policy committee meeting held a fortnight ago were revealed in the minutes of the meeting, which were released by the RBI on Friday.
The RBI governor’s and other members’ comments are being seen as hawkish and have dashed expectations of a rate cut in 2024.
Shreya Sodhani, an economist with Barclays, said the MPC minutes showed that members who had been hawkish have dialled up their hawkishness a notch, advocating patience on inflation and uncertainties amid robust growth. “With the MPC seeing no urgency to cut rates, we doubt RBI will front-run the Fed in pivoting. We, therefore, now expect rate cuts from Q4 24,” she said.

Sweating Too Much In Summer? Follow These Expert’s Tips And Avoid Embarrassment | Health News

0

The sweat glands in your body are responsible for sweating and bad odour. Then there is the apocrine gland which is a second type of sweat gland and is located in body areas where you have hair, such as your armpits and groin. While sweating is natural and even healthy, in summer, you might sweat excessively. This can make people socially awkward and anxious. Dr Jyoti Gupta, a Delhi-based dermatologist, shares a few tips to control excessive sweating.

How To Prevent Excessive Sweating

1. Change Your Diet: Overtly smelly foods like garlic, onions, alcohol, spicy foods, caffeinated drinks, etc can be limited. If you find some particular food is making you smell worse, eliminate it from your diet or have it in limited quantity.

2. Do Not Over-Exercise: While staying sedentary is bad, overexercising, especially in summer, can cause you to sweat profusely and in turn, lead to bad odour. To reduce sweat, try to exercise in cooler environments like indoors. Those who sweat too much, opt for exercises like weight lifting or yoga, rather than cardio in summer.

3. Check On Your Medicines: Some medications can lead to excessive sweating. Some of the drugs include prednisone (Rayos)and escitalopram (Lexapro). OTC pain relievers, like ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) can also lead to too much sweat. If excessive sweating is too much of an issue, discuss with your healthcare provider about your options. Doctors can change your medicines, or change dosage. However, don’t change your medications without consulting a doctor.

4. Monitor Health Conditions: If you have issues like thyroid, or diabetes, or are suffering from fever due to undetermined causes, you can sweat excessively. Visit a healthcare professional and get yourself thoroughly checked.

5. Make Lifestyle Adjustments: Until and unless it’s an abnormal amount of sweat, making lifestyle changes can solve your problem to a large extent. In summer, especially if you are prone to sweating, stick to lightweight cotton clothes or those made of breathable fabric. Wash your face and body when too sweaty and change into a fresh pair of clothes. This also reduces the risk of bacterial or yeast infections. Stay hydrated, and drink plenty of fluids to compensate for the electrolytes lost through sweating.

6. Shave Your Armpits: Sweat evaporates quickly and doesn’t have as much time to interact with bacteria when your armpits are shaved.

Dermatological Procedures To Control Sweating

If you are sweating excessively, dermatological procedures might be suggested by doctors. “Neuromodulators, popularly known as Botox relaxes a chemical in the body that activates the sweat glands. So using underarm Botox injections can reduce sweating by 82–87%. The effects can typically last between 4 and months and after that, the process has to be repeated,” says Dr Jyoti Gupta. She adds that treatments for excessive sweating and body odour are largely dependent on the underlying cause, which can vary in every individual. Therefore, Dr Gupta says, it is important to know the underlying cause and talk about it freely with your dermatologist and seek the right treatment at the earliest.

“Want To Understand How It Works”: Harbhajan Singh Slams IPL Team In Epic Rant After PBKS vs MI IPL Game

0

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh lambasted Punjab Kings management for the decisions that they made against Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. MI made PBKS batter totter hard while chasing a target of 193. The pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee made short work of the PBKS opening batters and played a major role in reducing PBKS to 77/6. In the absence of designated skipper Shikhar Dhawan and opener Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran opened the inning for the hosts. (IPL 2024 Points Table)

After Punjab lost three wickets within the blink of an eye, Liam Livingstone was promoted in the order and sent in for the number four spot.

The decision of PBKS management didn’t go well with Harbhajan, as he slammed the management for their decisions.

“What was the point of sending Sam Curran to open? Prabhsimran got out while trying to pull. I can understand that both players got out on not-so-dangerous deliveries. Then the delivery that got Rilee Rossouw out was sensational. But then you sent Livingstone as a batter who plays the role of finisher and whenever he is the captain, he goes on no. 6 because he plays the role of finisher,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

After top batters failed to leave their mark, the uncapped Indian duo of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma raised hopes of an unprecedented comeback.

Shashank struck 41 off 25 deliveries, while Ashutosh took the game deep with his 61 off 28 deliveries.

“We have to appreciate Shashank and Ashutosh. I want to understand how this management works. They send Livingstone up in the batting order and the players who are in form, Shashank are sent afterwards. You sent Harpreet Bhatia ahead of him. If you have brought him, then you should have waited. Shashank is in good form he has already produced match-winning performances. If Sahshank and Ashutosh were not there PBKS would have fallen before 100. Ashutosh is in form and he should be promoted to the batting order. You should give youngsters an opportunity,” he added.

Recapping the match, star speedster Jasprit Bumrah’s (3/21) and Gerald Coetzee’s (3/32) influential spells, along with a scintillating 78-run knock from Surya Kumar Yadav, helped the Mumbai Indians defeat the Punjab Kings by nine runs.

MI survived an unprecedented Ashutosh (61 off 28) blitz after Suryakumar Yadav’s 78 helped the visitors post 192/7.

Some Older Women Need Extra Breast Scans. Why Won’t Medicare Pay?

0

Mammograms can miss tumors in women with dense breast tissue. So for these patients, doctors often include a second scan — ultrasound, for example, or an M.R.I. — which are more likely to turn up cancers at early stages.

But some older patients are running into an unexpected twist. Though many women see the extra scan as a routine form of prevention, Medicare won’t pay for it, and some patients are left to pick up a hefty tab.

Joellen Sommer, 66, who lives in Manhattan, went for her annual breast cancer screening in March. But the clinic’s staff said that while her mammogram would be fully covered by Medicare, a so-called supplemental ultrasound was not.

Ms. Sommer has dense breasts, and a family history of breast cancer. She said she has received mammograms and ultrasound imaging throughout her adult life. “I just don’t understand how something that has been the recommended diagnostic test for years is suddenly not covered by Medicare,” she said.

“My mother had breast cancer, my aunt had breast cancer — I guess that’s not enough,” she added. “I wonder if it was a test for men, if the same issue would arise.”

Lenox Hill Radiology in New York City has started warning patients that if they are insured by Medicare, they may be on the hook for up to $450 if they receive a breast ultrasound, even if breast tissue is known to be dense and the extra scan is performed on the same day as a screening mammogram.

An information sheet provided to physicians noted that Medicare does cover breast ultrasound under limited circumstances, such as “to assess palpable or nonpalpable breast masses, ambiguous mammograms and other signs or symptoms suggestive of breast cancer.”

Guidance about when and how often to undergo breast cancer screening has changed over the years, but mammograms, which use low dose X-rays to detect lesions, have long been the gold standard for early detection.

But mammograms can’t actually “see” tumors in dense breast tissue; both appear white in an X-ray. And dense breasts are not uncommon: While density declines with age, nearly half of women aged 40 and older who get mammograms are found to have dense breast tissue, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Breast tissue is considered dense when it has more fibrous and glandular tissue, and less fatty tissue.

Starting in September, all mammography centers in the United States will be required to inform patients who are screened for breast cancer if they have dense breasts. The effort to draw attention to the shortcomings of mammograms for these patients was started by women whose own cancers were detected at a late stage, despite regular mammography screenings.

Dense breast tissue is itself a risk factor for breast cancer. Women with extremely dense breasts have twice the risk compared with those who have what is called “scattered dense tissue,” or dense tissue here and there in the breast, studies have found.

Advocates say that for women with dense breast tissue, mammograms alone are “incomplete screening,” and some scientists agree. Dr. Dorraya El-Ashry, chief scientific officer of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, said that a supplementary ultrasound is the current standard of care for a secondary screening for dense breasts.

“In women with the densest breasts, mammograms will miss about half of cancers present — half,” JoAnn Pushkin, executive director of DenseBreast-info, an educational group, said.

The most common questions the group receives are from women trying to navigate supplemental screenings, or find out why they were not covered by insurance, Ms. Pushkin said.

“That’s a lot of cancers being left on the table, and an opportunity missed to find them at the earliest stage possible, when they’re most treatable and survivable,” she added.

The organization is supporting the Find It Early Act, legislation proposed by Representative Rosa DeLauro, Democrat of Connecticut, and Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, Republican of Pennsylvania. The measure would ensure that all health insurance plans cover screening and diagnostic breast imaging, including mammograms, ultrasounds and M.R.I.s, with no cost sharing.

A spokeswoman for the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said its policies have not changed: Medicare covers annual radiologic screening for women ages 40 and older at 100 percent, as part of preventive care.

But the agency makes a distinction between mammograms and other screening tests, like ultrasounds, and they are billed like diagnostic tools, the spokeswoman said in an email.

And there is not universal agreement on the value of alternative screening for women with dense breasts. The American College of Radiology says that 3-D mammography increases the number of cancers that can be seen without additional testing, and that ultrasound and M.R.I. scans can help find cancers that can’t be seen on a mammogram.

But neither the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists nor the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has endorsed additional breast cancer screening methods for patients with dense breast tissue. There is insufficient data from clinical trials to do so, the groups say.

There are also disadvantages associated with supplementary screening methods, such as a high rate of false positives with ultrasounds, which cause unnecessary anxiety and follow-up care, and the high costs associated with M.R.I. scans.

But in a letter last year to the task force, Ms. DeLauro and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democrat of Florida, said several of the panel’s recommendations have put women’s lives at risk, including the task force’s failure to “recognize the significant body of evidence supporting additional screenings” for patients with dense breasts.

How “The Brazilian Superman” Became An Internet Sensation

0

Leonardo Muylaert poses like Superman. (Image courtesy: AFP)

Leonardo Muylaert was just another mild-mannered professional on vacation with his girlfriend when the 36-year-old Brazilian went viral on social media thanks to an unexpected superpower that has changed his life: his uncanny resemblance to Superman. Muylaert – a strapping, bespectacled civil rights lawyer from Brasilia – was in line at the 2022 Comic-Con convention in Sao Paulo when a stranger surreptitiously shot a cell phone video of him, amazed at his resemblance to Superman film star Christopher Reeve.

“Am I seeing Clark Kent?” asked the star-struck comic book fan, in a clip that soon racked up thousands of views on TikTok – unbeknownst to Muylaert, who did not even have a social media account at the time.

Weeks later, Muylaert learned through friends that he had become an online sensation, dubbed “The Brazilian Superman.” “It was funny and crazy to read that so many people think I look like Superman,” he told AFP.

That’s when an idea took root in the back of his mind, he said: get a Superman suit and try the alter ego on for size. He ordered an old-fashioned costume online, and started traveling around Brazil as Superman.

Muylaert visits hospitals, schools and charities, poses for pictures with commuters on random street corners, and generally tries to be what he calls a symbol of kindness and hope – all free of charge.

He put his new persona on social media and soon became an internet star, his videos reposted by the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn, director of the upcoming Superman movie.

Every Clark needs a Lois

To make his magic happen, this Superman relies on his super-organized girlfriend, Helenise Santos, who handles his agenda, shoots videos for his social media accounts and constantly gets the question: are you Lois Lane?

On a recent trip to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (INTO), a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Muylaert visited patients and posed for selfies with staff thrilled to see a 2.03-meter (nearly six-foot-seven-inch) superhero in the office.

“His presence puts a smile on everyone’s face, not just patients but also the whole hospital staff. It gives everyone a break, and new energy to deal with our intense routine,” said INTO research coordinator Rodrigo Cardoso.

Muylaert, who studied in the United States on a basketball scholarship before finding his superhero calling, handed out presents to toddlers at the hospital and amiably shot videos for elderly patients’ children and grandchildren.

The Brazilian Superman has an uncertain future.

When not wearing his red and blue suit, he returns to his normal life as a lawyer specialized in civil rights who needs reading glasses to work. Muylaert says he is weighing how big a space in his life to give the superhero role.

“It fills a void in that sometimes very solitary office routine,” he said at his law firm in Brasilia, sporting a suit and tie and looking remarkably like Clark Kent sitting at his desk at the Daily Planet.

“Sometimes amid all the long hours and paperwork, you forget how important human interaction is and the care and attention so many people need. Serving the community fills that void. And all the incredible feedback I’ve gotten from people on social media motivates me to keep going.”

New York AG seeks to void Trump business fraud bond

0

Former President Donald Trump returns from a lunch break at Manhattan criminal court as jury selection continues in New York on April 18, 2024.

Jabin Botsford | Reuters

The New York Attorney General’s office on Friday asked a judge to effectively void a $175 million bond posted by former President Donald Trump to secure a much larger monetary damage award in his civil business fraud case as he appeals the judgment.

The AG’s office in a filing said Trump and other defendants in the case had failed to show there is enough identifiable collateral to back the bond for the judgment in Manhattan Supreme Court.

The filing notes that the surety Trump used to obtain the bond, Knight Specialty Insurance Company, is “a small insurer that is not authorized to write business in New York and thus not regulated by the state’s insurance department, had never before written a surety bond in New York or in the prior two years in any other jurisdiction, and has a total policyholder surplus of just $138 million.”

The filing opposes a joint motion by Trump and KSIC to justify the insurer as the surety company holding the bond.

Lawyers for AG Letitia James asked Judge Arthur Engoron to require Trump and other defendants to put up a replacement bond within seven days of ruling on the issue. James’ lawsuit against Trump led to the massive civil judgment against him.

A hearing on the bond dispute is set for Monday.

Engoron in February found Trump, the Trump Organization and other defendants liable for fraud, saying they had falsely inflated the value of real estate assets for years with the goal of boosting Trump’s net worth. Those actions in turn helped the company get better loan terms and other financial benefits.

Trump personally was ordered to pay $454 million in damages, an amount that is growing every day with interest. He is appealing the verdict.

Trump was required under New York law to post a bond to guarantee the judgment as he appeals the decision.

This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.

“Pistol Shooters Behind Schedule, Don’t Know Who Will Go To Olympics”: Jaspal Rana

0

Legendary pistol marksman Jaspal Rana has expressed grave concerns over the delay in naming the Indian shooting contingent for the Paris Olympics, saying it will leave the selected shooters with little time for the final phase of preparations. Several countries, including the US and Italy, and many European powerhouses have announced their squads and their shooters are in the final phase of fine-tuning their skills and programs for the Olympics, even as India commenced its nearly month-long exercise on Friday.

The top-five ranked shooters in pistol and rifle category will undergo four trials — April 19-27 (New Delhi, trial 1 & 2) and May 10-19 (Bhopal, trial 3 & 4) — and the selection for Paris will be done after that, leaving precious little time for the last phase of training.

The Paris Olympics will commence on July 26.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has completed the trials in shotgun events, but they are yet to announce the squad in the hope that a few more shooters might secure Paris quotas in the Final Olympic Qualification Championship, which started in Doha on Friday.

“We are not in the same category of training and preparation as other people are getting around the world. They (strong countries in shooting sport) have already selected their teams and started their training and we are behind schedule,” said Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee shooter Rana in harsh comments against the NRAI’s policy.

“Nobody knows so far who is going and who is not going. That puts a lot of pressure on the players who have won quota places, while those who have not won the quota places there is a lot less pressure,” added the four-time Asian Games gold-medallist, who is currently the personal coach of Olympian Manu Bhaker.

In shooting sport, shooters win quota places for the country and the federation decides the contingent based on their performance in trials, national and international competitions.

Rana also flayed the ongoing trials at the Karni Singh Ranges, saying he had never seen a competition where only five shooters per event were short-listed.

As per the ISSF rules, eight shooters qualify for the finals in pistol and rifle events, barring men’s 25m rapid-fire, where six make it to medal round.

“Well, I have never seen five shooters (competing) in (the final), so I don’t know (what is happening). I never shot like that in my life. I’m seeing five shooters competing for the first time.

“At least, three more shooters should have been there. They should have at least completed the number of shooters in the finals… perhaps added three ‘zero’ shooters. They (NRAI) should have considered including zero shooters (to complete the ISSF requirement),” he added.

‘Zero’ shooters are not in contention for medals or quota places but complete the minimum requirements in a competition.

“Yes, I’ll be targeted for saying this, but I think there should have been three more shooters (as per the ISSF requirement). There are a lot of things that we can complain about, there are a lot of things which can be improved. But whatever is there is there (in front of everyone), and the shooters have to be ready for anything,” he added.

Jaspal felt a series of four trials was a bit too much and gave little time in between to rest and recover.

In case of Manu and Asian Games gold-medallist Esha Singh, they will have to appear in eight trials as the duo is in contention in 10m air pistol and 25m rapid-fire event. That puts added pressure on their physical and mental well-being over a duration of a month.

“My personal view is shooters should be ready for anything, but honestly this is too much. They (federation) could have have used some of the scores in (national and internationals) competitions as trial scores. You (NRAI) have all the options, provided you want to do it,” he said.

Asked if this was the ideal situation for shooters to de-stress, when not even two days are there between trials, he said, “There is no time (to de-stress). There is not good enough time even between the trials in Delhi and Bhopal.”
